Nils Aden possesses a wealth of experience from leading roles in international ship owning and management, transformation projects, M&A transactions and integration. In his previous assignments, he overlooked the merger of V.Ships and Norddeutsche Reederei H. Schuldt as Managing Director, led Zeaborn as CEO and transformed E.R. Schiffahrt as CEO into an international ship management player. All in all, Nils Aden can look back on a quarter century of know-how as an executive in the maritime industry.


Jorge d’Almeida

President, Association for Shipping (A4S)

 

Jorge d’Almeida has over 50 years’ experience in the maritime sector. He graduated from the Portuguese Naval Academy and holds an MS degree in Naval Engineering from MIT and an MBA in finance from New York University. He worked for 12 years in the USA, where he joined US Lines, under Malcom McLean, the containership pioneer, when he lunched the first round-the-world liner service in 1982. He co-founded Saconsult in 2001 and has been engaged in wide-ranging projects in the maritime sector, including the launching of the Sines mega-container terminal, where he served as Managing Director. Presently, he is the president of the Sines Port and Logistics Community. He is a co-founder of 4Shipping, an association that promotes the Blue Economy in Portugal.


Uwe altenbach

Uwe Altenbach holds the current position of Sales Manager at Hoppe Marine GmbH since June 2022. The speaker is responsible from sales perspective for the Maihak Performance Monitoring and Maritime Internet of Things product portfolio including Fleet Data Services. The speaker holds a degree in mechanical engineering and has many years of experience in automotive powertrain development with a focus on automation and standardization of engine testing procedures and processes.  


João Ferreira Alves

João Ferreira Alves has eight years of experience in the legal field.

He has a comprehensive background in maritime law, ship finance, tax, and real estate. João advises both financial institutions and shipping companies, with a strong focus on ship registration and ship mortgages, providing comprehensive legal guidance in structuring ship finance transactions.

He also assists clients in a wide range of labour, tax, and social security matters relating to seafarers, as well as corporate and tax compliance for companies licensed under the International Business Center of Madeira.

João holds a master’s degree in business and labour law, a postgraduate specialisation in tax law, and a postgraduate qualification in maritime law.


Dr. Jorge Antunes

CEO & Founder, TecnoVeritas

Dr Jorge Antunes is the Founder, CEO, and Technical Director of TecnoVeritas, a Marine Engineering Innovation company dedicated to ship energy systems and decarbonisation. With over 40 years of experience in marine engineering, he is a specialist in ship performance, fleet energy management, and the environmental retrofitting of cruise and naval vessels.

He holds an MSc and PhD in Marine Technology from Newcastle University, U.K., where he also lectured for 20 years. His academic and technical work spans from conventional propulsion systems, diesel and gas, to nuclear, with a particular focus on dual-fuel hydrogen-based systems. He currently leads the Hydrogen Pioneer Project for Mitsubishi.

Dr Antunes has been a consultant to leading engine manufacturers and evaluator for EU H2020 programmes on green shipping and hydrogen. He has authored peer-reviewed publications, including in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, and regularly contributes as a reviewer for other scientific journals.

Under his leadership, TecnoVeritas has received international recognition, including the Seatrade Clean Shipping Award and a Green Project Award. He is a Chartered Engineer and an active member of several professional associations related to marine technology and hydrogen development.


Nigel Bowen-Morris

Nigel Bowen-Morris is a partner at Stephenson Harwood and established the firm’s Piraeus office in 1996. He specialises in ship finance and advises leading international and Greek banks, financial institutions, and top-tier shipping companies on complex asset-backed transactions. 

Nigel has extensive experience in structuring and documenting secured loan facilities, operating leases, and innovative finance structures across the shipping and aviation sectors. His recent work includes advising on multi-jurisdictional syndicated loans, sustainability-linked facilities, and the registration, discharge, and transfer of Greek mortgages. Highly regarded in the market for his expertise in high-stakes financial transactions.

Recognised in Chambers Europe and Chambers Global with a Band 1 ranking in Shipping (Greece), he is praised for his technical skill, client service, and market insight.

João Canning Clode

Founder & Director, MARE-Madeira

João Canning Clode is a marine ecologist from Madeira Island, Portugal, is the founder and coordinator of MARE-Madeira and a Principal Investigator at the Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology, and Innovation (ARDITI - Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação Tecnologia e Inovação). 

 

He is also Deputy Director of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, one of Portugal’s largest R&D units.

 

João holds a PhD in Biological Oceanography and Marine Sciences from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, and was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), USA. He chairs the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Working Group for Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms, has authored over 120 publications, and his research has gained international media coverage. Finally, in 2023, João was selected as an Edinburgh Ocean Leader, and in 2024, he was recognized among Elsevier’s top 2% of scientists globally in terms of scientific impact.

Claudia Santos Cruz is a partner and head of the Shipping Practice at Morais Leitão. She is qualified as a lawyer in 3 jurisdictions: England, Portugal and Mozambique. She has acted for a wide range of shipping clients over the years including international oil companies chartering FPSO’s and other offshore drilling rigs; cargo companies such as well as cruise line companies. In Portugal, Claudia is often seen as the international go to lawyer instructed by foreign insurers and P&I Clubs in high profile cases.

 

Claudia has a significant ship finance practice acting for Lenders on a regular basis who register vessels temporarily and permanently on the Madeira International Ship Registry.

At 44 and originally from Lisbon, I began my studies in Mechanical Engineering—specializing in energy systems - at the School of Science and Technology (FCT), Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in the late 1990s. While still completing my degree, I gained initial work experience as a sales executive before joining Lisnave Shipyard as an Assistant Project Manager, later advancing to Principal Project Manager.

During my 16 years at Lisnave, I worked in the Project Management Department, focusing on ship repair planning, technical team coordination, client relations, and financial oversight. This role combined strong technical responsibilities with valuable interpersonal experience, especially in dealing with international clients.

Recently, I joined the International Ship Registry of Madeira and its Technical Commission (CT MAR), marking a new phase in my career. Over the past three years, I have contributed to the modernization and digital transformation of registry services—implementing new digital platforms, enhancing fleet monitoring tools, and helping define eligibility criteria. Our work continues to support the registry’s reputation for excellence while promoting Madeira and Portugal on the global stage.


Paulo Falé

Paulo Falé is a maritime security expert with over 30 years of experience in naval operations, emergency response, and port protection. He currently leads Port Security and Operations at APRAM, S.A., where he oversees strategic safety planning and risk management.

 

A former Naval Officer, he has coordinated major security operations for international maritime events and is a certified Mass Rescue Operations expert with the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF). He holds advanced qualifications in maritime law, civil protection, and emergency management, and is an accredited trainer in maritime safety and incident response.

Telmo Ferreira

Telmo Ferreira, Head of Emerging Business & Shipping, PRIO

Telmo Ferreira, holds a bachelor’s in economics and a master’s in Corporate Finance.

Throughout his professional career, Telmo accumulated experience in different economic/industry sectors with professional roles/positions related to financial markets and risk management strategies, specifically financial derivatives instruments used to mitigate commodity risk exposure.

First, in the investment banking sector, pulp and paper industry and currently in the energy segment. 

With a strong familiar legacy and connection to the maritime industry, Telmo is now taking the opportunity to lead PRIO to be at the forefront of the maritime energy transition in Portugal.

Head of Emerging Markets and Shipping in PRIO, bunkers market, maritime sustainability targets and the related new legislation coming from IMO and EU is certainly his new and biggest challenge.


Cátia Fernandes

Cátia Fernandes has more than two decades of background in Maritime Law and Ship Finance.

Cátia acts as legal advisor in relevant cross border transactions on behalf of international shipowners, banks and leasing entities. She provides legal assistance in matters related to ship registration, ship mortgages, regulatory, labour and tax matters.

Cátia is an Arbitrator at the Lisbon Maritime Arbitration Centre and a consultant at the IMO.

Cátia lectures on postgraduate studies in Maritime Law by the University of Lisbon School of Law and by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Cátia won the award “Best in Shipping and Maritime” by the Women in Business Law Europe Awards in 2020 and is ranked in the main international Legal Directories such as Chambers & Partners and Best Lawyers.

Roy Spode Garibaldi

Mr. Roy Spode Garibaldi graduated from the Loyola University of Chicago in 1990 with an honours degree in Political Science and International Relations. He worked as an intern in 1989 in U.S. Senator Paul Simon’s office in Chicago, handling foreign affairs and immigration issues. After teaching at ISAL – Instituto Superior de Administração e Línguas da Madeira, he joined SDM – The Madeira Development Corporation in 1991, where since then he has been involved in the promotion and development of the International Business Centre of Madeira,  which consists of a prefential tax regime comprising an Industrial Free Trade Zone, an International Services sector and the International Ship Register of Madeira – MAR. Mr. Garibaldi is currently the CEO of SDM. He has been a speaker at several international conferences concerning international investment and taxation, attraction of foreign investment and ship registration.


Jeanne M. Grasso

Partner, Blank Rome LLP

Jeanne M. Grasso is a partner in the Maritime Practice Group in Blank Rome’s Washington, DC Office. She counsels vessel owners/operators, charterers, and waterfront facilities on regulatory compliance related to the International Maritime Organization, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and other federal and state agencies. Her practice involves, among other issues, ballast water management, air emissions, port State control, and coastwise trade. Jeanne also handles internal and grand jury investigations and defense of administrative, civil, and criminal enforcement actions; advises on environmental compliance and pollution incident response; and helps clients establish compliance programs in an effort to avoid enforcement actions.

 

Before joining Blank Rome, Jeanne worked in the Office of Congressional Affairs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) handling fisheries matters. She also served as staff to the House of Representatives’ Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries.

 

Outside her law practice, Jeanne’s passion is SCUBA diving; she is also an avid hiker, golfer, and cyclist.

Henning gramann

Dr. Gundermann is admitted to the Bar Association of Hamburg and studied law at the Universities of Freiburg and Würzburg. His career includes serving as Assistant to the Prime Minister of Saxony, Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf, as well as Assistant to the President of the Israeli Supreme Court, Prof. Aharon Barak.

Mrs Laura Langh-Lagerlöf is the Managing Director and co-owner of the Finnish company Langh Group Oy Ab and its daughter company, shipping company Langh Ship Oy Ab. Laura has a master’s degree in Economics & Business Administration from Åbo Akademi University and she has since an early age been involved in the family business. Thanks to the excellent knowledge in the maritime industry and the good business sense, Laura has led the shipping company successfully. 

She has from the start been a very important actor in the scrubber development and she is the Commercial Director of the scrubber manufacturer Langh Tech Oy Ab. Langh Tech’s SOx scrubbers and water treatment systems have currently been sold to over one hundred reference vessels.

Nikos Mertzanidis

Vice President, CLIA

 

Nikos Mertzanidis is Acting Director General for Europe at Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) where he leads the association’s European office in Brussels. In this role, he oversees advocacy efforts on behalf of CLIA’s member cruise lines operating across Europe and champions policies and practices that support the cruise sector’s energy transition towards net-zero emissions by 2050. 

Mertzanidis joined CLIA in 2016 as Manager, European Government Affairs and was promoted to Director in 2020 and Vice-President in 2024, and to his present position in 2025.

Prior to joining CLIA, Mertzanidis was a political advisor, working on the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, and later joined Imperial Brands Ltd. where he was the chief lobbyist focused on EU legislation for FMCG, taxation, new generation products, and consumer affairs. 

A seasoned government and public affairs professional, with expertise in global public affairs, policy making and European business regulation, Mertzanidis is a long-standing member of the International Political Science Association and the Society of European Affairs Professionals.

Capt. Jörg Molzahn is the founder and Managing Partner of EUROMAR, bringing with him two decades of experience in the shipping industry. Capt. Molzahn graduated from the University of Applied Sciences in Elsfleth. Christian Reinert

Partner and Managing Director, ANCON BLUE LAW

Christian Reinert is a partner at ANCON BLUE LAW, a boutique law firm with a special focus on the maritime industry.

Christian assists clients now for over a decade on all aspects of corporate housekeeping (including setting up of local branches)  as well as corporate and loan restructurings, often involving multiple jurisdictions. He also represents their interests in insolvency and administrative proceedings and handles enforcement actions, including ship arrests. Furthermore, he advises on shipping related regulatory issues, including money laundering, economic sanctions and embargos.

As a consequence of the increased dynamics in the shipping industry, Christian assists maritime employers in employment law matters, such as disciplinary issues, regulatory aspects (including immigration) up to redundancies and employment litigation.

 

A further part of Christian’s work concerns renewable energy. Having been involved from the early days of Germany’s offshore wind industry, Christian advises a broad client base, including contractors, wind farm owners, shipyards and ship owners. As a keen Portuguese learner, he is a member of our Portugal Desk. 


Pedro Reis (tbc)

He graduated in Management and Business Administration from Católica Portuguesa University, with additional executive training at Harvard Business School (USA) in Strategic Finance (2005), at Insead (France), Advanced Management Program (1995), as well as at Católica University, in the Advanced Management for Executives Programme (1994-95).

He is a manager and consultant.

He chaired the AICEP – Portuguese Agency for Foreign Trade and Investment from 2011 to 2014. 

He was Executive Secretary of the Strategic Council for the Economy’s Internationalisation (CEIE). 

He was on the National Council for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Industry Council under the Ministry of Economy and coordinated the Standing Committee for Investment Support (CPAI). 

He was member of the Portugal Ventures General and Supervisory Board.

He was Senior Advisor of the Banco Millennium BCP Executive Board in 2014, executive director of BCP Capital in 2015, Strategic Marketing and Business Development in 2017, and Head of Institutional Banking at Millennium BCP from 2019 e 2021.

Pedro Reis was also on the Banco Português de Fomento’s advisory board, presided over the Portuguese Communities Abroad advisory board, and was part of the Portuguese Red Cross Supreme Council.


Nektaria Retsou

Nektaria Retsou is the General Manager of Hellas Confidence Shipmanagement S.A., the Technical Managers and DOC holders for the bulk carriers fleet of Van Weelde Shipping Group.

Born and raised in Piraeus - Greece, she started her career in the industry in 2002, after she earned her bachelor in Shipping Business Management from the Maritime Studies Department of the University of her home city, Piraeus. 

From the early beginnings of her career, she was actively involved in operational, technical and compliance aspects of the ship management, holding key positions in the relevant departments of well-established Greek shipping companies. In 2007, she focused her career on safety, security and environmental aspects and for the next 11 years, she gained expertise in these fields as she was engaged in the SQE Departments of Dutch and Greek companies, holding the positions of the DPA, CSO and SQE Manager.

In 2018, she rejoined the Dutch “Van-Weelde Shipping Group” as the Deputy General Manager of the Greek based Technical Managers/ DOC holders of the Group, Hellas Confidence Shipmanagement S.A. In January 2022 she was promoted to the position of the General Manager, which she holds to this day.

Nuno Santos

Nuno Antunes dos Santos was born in 1965 in Portugal. He has a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and an MBA.

Nuno worked in Research & Development and as an Assistant Lecturer at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon University.

He then worked in three different shipyards in Portugal – Estaleiros Navais do Mondego, NavalCentro and Navalria Drydocks – with different positions through: Production, Design, Planning, Quality, Sales, General Manager, Member of the Board of Directors.

He later joined Royal IHC shipyards, in The Netherlands, where he had different roles:

  • Proposals Manager for Standard Offshore Vessels
  • Sales Manager for Brazil, Mexico and Canada
  • Shipbuilding Expert, responsible for Robotics and Automation

Throughout his career, Nuno was also involved in other activities such as:

Nazli Selek

Senior Partner, NSN LAW FIRM / WISTA International

 

She is one of the founding partners of NSN LAW FIRM. She has been practicing maritime law since 1995. She is a gradute of Istanbul University, Faculty of Law and completed her LLM in Yeditepe University in Istanbul. Her LLM thesis is “ Salvage under Turkish Commercial Code” and such thesis has been published as a book. Her areas of expertise in maritime law consists of marine pollutions, salvage and wreck removals, fires on board, charter party disputes, cargo claims and crew claims. She has handled major casualties occurred at the Bosphorus, Dardanelles, Izmir and Iskenderun. She is currently performing her PhD in Piri Reis University on “Sea Pollutions arising from vessel fuels”.

She is a member of Turkish Maritime Lawyers Association, a member of the executive commitee of WISTA INTERNATIONAL and WILAT / CILT.


Marisa Lameiras Da silva

General Director, DGPM 

 

Marisa Lameiras da Silva is currently the General Director for Portuguese Maritime Policy. Before this she has had leading roles in shaping environmental policies, namely as Head of Strategy for the Portuguese Environmental Agency and adviser to the Portuguese Minister of the Environment and Climate Action, as well as responsible for the coordination of the national Action Plan for a Sustainable Bioeconomy.

 

In her previous role she was heavily involved in maritime policies as adviser to the Portuguese Minister of the Sea responsible for the Sustainable Ocean Economy and heavily involved in several subjects and projects such as offshore renewable energy, blue bioeconomy, blue Innovation and circular economy.

 

Her background is a degree in Chemical Engineering, a MSc in Sanitary Engineering and a MSc in Project Management. She has held multiple roles including Advisor, Environmental Consulting, Environmental Compliance Specialist, Senior Program Management (for strategic national environmental projects), among many others.

 

Since 2023, Marisa Lameiras da Silva has chaired the Organising Committee of the Mário Ruivo Prize – Oceanic Generations, a competition that challenges young people to produce films that promote and convey to society the importance of the Ocean as a life support system on planet Earth.

In her daily work, Marisa Lameiras da Silva drives innovation, preservation, and sustainable development of marine resources, promoting cooperation and collaboration.

 

Marisa Lameiras da Silva was recently appointed Ambassador of the Sustainable Development Goals Alliance Portugal, with special responsibility for promoting SDG 14 – Life Below Water.

Pedro Rebelo de Sousa, Founding and Senior Partner of SRS, is considered a benchmark in Finance and M&A.

Pedro advises domestic and international clients on significant banking and finance matters, as well as structuring and executing big ticket M&A transactions.

With over 40 years of experience, Pedro has a unique banking and finance background having been a senior officer in an international investment bank in São Paulo and New York, and also as Chairman/CEO of a Portuguese bank.


Victor Straubhaar

Victor Straubhaar is Vice President Projects at UNITED WATERWAYS AG with 15 years of international experience in the European Inland Cruise & Day Ship Industry.

 

Victor has been located five years in Limassol, Cyprus, where he was working in different positions in a vastly growing hospitality crewing company. After re-locating to Cologne, Germany, Victor was leading restructuring and change management projects, before taking on the Managing Director role in Dresden, Germany to lead the transition of the historic day ship company Weisse Flotte Sachsen GmbH.

 

Since Mid-2024 located in Porto, Portugal Victor is tasked with the development of the growing Portuguese operation of the group, next to leading the Project & Analytics team in Switzerland, with a specific focus on the group's newbuilding & retrofitting pipeline.


Michael Suhr

Korean Register (KR), Senior Vice President / Regional Director North Europe

 

- Born into a seafaring family with plenty of "Vitamin Sea"
- Started his career as a ship mechanic with Hamburg Süd, followed by studying 
- Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen
- Participated in a research project at the Center of Ocean Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras in Chennai)
- Worked as a ship surveyor at Lloyd's Register, including involvement in cruise ship newbuilds in Papenburg and the supervision of operating fleets
- Held various leadership positions at Germanischer Lloyd (1999-2010), including: Group Leader for fleet supervision, Head of Department for newbuilding and conversion projects, Head of Department for certification and also served as Task Force Surveyor for complex cases
- Director and Head of Department for Assembly and Commissioning of Offshore Power Transmission Substations at Siemens (managing up to 180 employees)

- Currently Senior Vice President / Regional Director North Europe at Korean Register (KR) (since 2016)

Manuela Tomassini

Head of Department Sustainability & Technical Assistance, European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA)

Ms Manuela Tomassini is a lawyer by education, specialised in Maritime, EU and International Law. 

In 1994 she joined the Italian Ministry of Transport and she held different positions within the Department of Maritime Transport, with responsibilities in the fields of maritime safety, EU and International Affairs.

From 2000 until 2007 she worked in Brussels as Transport Attache' at the Italian Permanent Representation of Italy to the EU, in charge for the maritime dossiers. 

In September 2007 she started working at EMSA as Policy Advisor and Head of the Bureau of the Executive Director. She then assumed different positions in the organisation, as Head of Department since 2011. Since January 2020 she holds the position of Head of Department 1, 'Sustainability & Technical Assistance'.
